Therapies

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of psychotherapy that helps you accept the difficulties that come with life. It is a form of mindfulness-based therapy, which assists in overcoming negative thoughts and feelings. ACT is also helpful in addressing commitments to making changes, and what to do when you have difficulty sticking to your goals.

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT)

  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy stresses the role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. It is based on the belief that thoughts, rather than people or events, cause our negative feelings. CBT is a structured collaboration between therapist and client and often calls for homework assignments. It has been clinically proven that CBT helps clients in a relatively short amount of time with a wide range of disorders, including depression and anxiety.

Culturally Sensitive

  • Culturally sensitive therapy is based on the premise that people from different backgrounds and cultures have differing values, practices, and beliefs. At Afordable Counselling we are cognisant, sensitive and respectful towards these differences and treat all our clients without pre-conceived judgements or expectations..

Eclectic

  • The primary therapeutic approach at Affordable Counselling is eclectic in nature. It draws upon various aspects of cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamic methods to design and create a unique, custom-made approach to best address our clients’ particular problems, and to appeal to their sensibility.

Family / Marital

  • We work with families and couples both together and individually, to help them improve their communication skills, build on the positive aspects of their relationships, and repair any problematic, harmful or negative aspects.

Integrative

  • Integrative therapy refers to therapy in which elements from different types of therapy may be used. By 'integrating' two or more therapeutic styles we are able to bring about a personalised and practical approach to healing. It also refers to the process of 'integrating' personalities and allowing flexibility in solving emotional problems.

Multicultural

  • Multicultural awareness is an understanding and sensitivity of the values, experiences, and lifestyles of minority groups. We have found that by recognising differences in race, culture, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status, the use Multicultural counselling can be extremely effective.

Person-Centred

  • Another central approach at Affordable Counselling is the use of Person-centred therapy, which uses a non-authoritative approach that allows our clients to take more of a lead role in discovering their own solutions. We act as a compassionate facilitator, listening without judgment and acknowledging, rather than controlling the conversation, moving it in a particular direction.

Solution Focused Brief (SFBT)

  • Solution-focused therapy, focuses on what clients would like to achieve through the therapeutic relationship, rather than delving into their troubles or mental health issues. We help our clients envision a desirable future, and then map out the small and large changes necessary to realise it in a meaningful way. Using SFT, we encourage our clients to build on their strengths rather than dwell on their problems or limitations.
